Advantages and Application Areas of Quick-Connect Ball Valves
The operating temperature range of quick-connect ball valves is limited by the material of the valve seat seal, which is typically made of nylon, rubber, or polytetrafluoroethylene. The shut-off function of the ball valve is achieved by pressing the metal ball against the plastic valve seat under the action of the process fluid.
In certain areas, elastoplastic deformation occurs under specific contact pressures. This deformation helps ensure the sealing performance of ball valves by compensating for manufacturing surface roughness and dimensional inaccuracies of the ball. Fire safety and fire resistance of ball valves should also be taken into account when selecting their performance and design, particularly in equipment and piping systems handling flammable and explosive media, as well as in industries such as chemical processing, petroleum, and metallurgy. Special attention must be paid to these aspects, since the seat seal rings of quick-connect ball valves are typically made of plastic.
Quick-connect ball valves are generally recommended for pipeline systems that require rapid shut-off and opening under high pressure, feature a neckless flow path, exhibit no wear, are free of slurry, demand stringent sealing performance with minimal atmospheric leakage, enable two-position control, prevent vaporization and cavitation, operate with low actuation torque, produce low noise, and offer low fluid resistance. These valves are suitable for applications involving low-pressure shutoff, lightweight construction, and corrosive media, and can also be used in piping systems and cryogenic equipment.
Quick-connect ball valves must be ball valves that have undergone rigorous degreasing, particularly in oxygen piping systems in the metallurgical industry. When the main pipeline of an oil or gas system is to be buried underground, full-bore welded ball valves shall be used. For applications requiring flow regulation, V-notch ball valves with a special design should be selected. In chemical, petrochemical, petroleum, power, and urban construction projects, metal-to-metal sealed ball valves are suitable for piping systems operating at temperatures above 200°C.
Advantages of quick-connect ball valves: 1. Quick-connect ball valves exhibit low flow resistance and do not seize during operation, making them reliably suitable for use with low-boiling-point liquids and corrosive media;
2. Quick-acting ball valves can achieve complete sealing over a wide range of temperatures and pressures; certain designs have an opening/closing time as short as 0.05 to 0.1 seconds, making them suitable for automated test-bed systems and enabling rapid on/off operation without any adverse effects on system performance.
3. The spherical closure member can automatically center itself at the seat, ensuring reliable sealing on both sides of the process fluid; when fully open or fully closed, the sealing surfaces of the sphere and valve seat are completely isolated from the process fluid, thereby preventing erosion of the sealing surfaces even when the fluid passes through the valve at high velocity.
4. Quick-connect ball valves can be regarded as a rational valve design for cryogenic fluid systems due to their light weight and compact structure; moreover, the symmetrical valve body effectively withstands stresses transmitted from the piping, particularly in welded-body configurations.
5. The shut-off element must be capable of withstanding the high pressure differential during closure. Fully welded ball valves can be directly buried underground, protecting the internal components from corrosion and achieving a service life of up to 30 years, making them an ideal choice for oil and gas pipelines.
